Netlify alternative for teams with a backend on their own servers
Netlify is a quick way to ship a frontend, but since the move to credits every production deploy, gigabyte of bandwidth and function run draws from a monthly pool that Pro caps at 3,000 for 20 USD. Deployment keeps git push deploys, branch previews and rollbacks, and runs the site, API, workers and database on servers in your own cloud account for a flat panel subscription from 49 USD, with zero-downtime releases on every plan and roles with an audit log from Team.

Deployment and Netlify side by side
Netlify is a web platform with a global CDN and serverless functions. Deployment is a control panel for servers you own. Netlify figures come from Netlify's published pricing.
| Deployment | Netlify | |
|---|---|---|
| Where apps run | Your cloud account or your own server, hosted panel | Netlify's CDN and serverless functions |
| Subscription | Starter 49, Team 199, Agency 499, Enterprise 1 499 USD. Yearly billing is half price | Free 0, Personal 9, Pro 20 USD, Enterprise custom |
| How usage is billed | Whatever your server provider includes, no per-deploy or per-request metering | Credits: 15 per production deploy, 20 per GB of bandwidth, 10 per GB-hour of compute, 2 per 10,000 requests |
| Included usage | Server capacity you rent | 300 credits on Free, 1,000 on Personal, 3,000 on Pro, more packs for sale |
| Stacks | Static, Node.js, Next.js, PHP, Python, Rails, Go, Java, .NET, Docker | Frontend frameworks plus functions |
| Databases and workers | Run on the same server as the app | Through separate services and add-ons |
| Team access | 1 member on Starter, 10 on Team, 30 on Agency. Roles and audit log from Team | Unlimited members on Pro, SSO and SCIM on Enterprise |
| Global edge delivery | Single region per server, add a CDN for global caching | Built in |
Why teams move off Netlify
Teams that leave rarely dislike the product. They leave because of cost shape, backend scope or control.
Credits make the monthly bill a forecast
Deploys, bandwidth, compute and requests all draw from one pool. A busy release week or a traffic spike burns through it faster than the plan name suggests.
Frequent deploys cost credits
At 15 credits per production deploy, 100 releases in a month use 1,500 credits, half of a Pro allowance, before a single visitor arrives. A team that ships many times a day feels this first.
The backend does not live there
A static frontend is one piece. The API, queue worker, cron jobs and database need homes too. Deployment runs all of them from one panel on one server.
Agencies hosting many client sites
Agency covers 60 servers and unlimited sites for 499 USD, so each client can sit on their own server in their own account while you manage all of them from one panel.
Keep the git push workflow you like on Netlify
Connect a repository and map branches to environments. Pushes trigger builds with logs in the panel, branch environments work as deploy previews, environment variables are kept per environment and one-click rollback returns to a kept release. Every plan runs health checks before a zero-downtime switch.
Static builds are served directly and server-rendered apps run as a normal Node.js process. See Next.js hosting on your own server, Node.js deployment with workers and the Vercel alternative comparison if you also run projects there.
Where the cost lines cross
Netlify Pro lists at 20 USD a month with 3,000 credits. One site with a handful of deploys a week stays well inside that, and a cheaper option is hard to find. Netlify sells extra credits (1,500 for 10 USD on Pro), and bandwidth at 20 credits per GB works out to roughly 0.13 USD per GB once you buy packs. Several projects, daily releases and an API add up.
A single 8 GB cloud server that typically costs around 25 to 50 USD a month can run the frontend, API, worker and database together. Add Deployment Starter at 49 USD, or 24 USD a month billed yearly, and the total is 49 to 99 USD with traffic included in the server plan. Your server needs room for builds and backups, and a single server is not high availability. See Deployment plan limits and the PaaS versus own server cost breakdown.
Where Netlify still wins
Netlify needs no server at all. Global CDN delivery, instant deploy previews, built-in forms and identity and a free tier are hard to beat for a marketing site or a docs site. Nothing needs patching.
Stay if the site is mostly static, traffic is moderate and nobody on the team wants to own a server. Move when credits, backend sprawl or data location drive the decision.
Move from Netlify in four steps
Keep the Netlify site live while you validate the new setup.
1. Prepare a server
Connect a cloud account or add a clean Ubuntu or Debian server over SSH, sized for builds and runtime.
2. Connect code and environment
Link the GitHub repository, pick the branch, review build and start commands and copy environment variables.
3. Replace platform-specific features
Swap Netlify forms, identity, edge functions and redirects for server equivalents, and put a CDN in front if you need global caching.
4. Cut over
Test on a temporary domain, lower DNS TTL, switch DNS and verify traffic before removing the Netlify site.

Netlify alternative questions
What is the best alternative to Netlify?
Deployment is a strong Netlify alternative when your team ships a frontend plus an API, workers and a database and wants them on servers in your own cloud account for a flat panel subscription. It keeps git push deploys, branch previews and rollbacks. Netlify stays better for global CDN delivery and zero server work.
How much does Netlify cost?
Netlify lists Free at 0 USD with 300 credits, Personal at 9 USD with 1,000 credits and Pro at 20 USD with 3,000 credits and unlimited members. Enterprise is custom. Production deploys, compute, bandwidth and requests all draw down credits, so the real bill depends on how often you deploy and how much traffic you serve.
How do Netlify credits work?
Each billable action costs credits. Netlify lists 15 credits per production deploy, 20 credits per GB of bandwidth, 10 credits per GB-hour of compute and 2 credits per 10,000 web requests. When the monthly credits run out you buy more, for example 1,500 credits for 10 USD on Pro.
Can I host a Netlify site on my own server?
Yes. A static or server-rendered site builds in CI and runs behind a web server or as a Node.js process. Deployment sets up the build, SSL, health checked releases and rollbacks for you. Netlify-specific features such as edge functions, forms and identity need a replacement before you switch.
Is Netlify cheaper than my own server?
For one marketing site with modest traffic, Netlify Free or Personal is usually cheaper and simpler. When several projects, frequent production deploys and an API all draw on credits, a fixed-price server with Deployment Starter at 49 USD plus the server fee is easier to budget. Compare your usage page, not the entry price.
How do I move from Netlify to my own server?
Connect a server to Deployment, link the repository, copy environment variables and set the build and publish or start commands. Replace Netlify-only features, test on a temporary domain, then lower DNS TTL and switch the domain. Keep the Netlify site until traffic checks out.
