Railway pricing in 2026 and what a real stack costs per month

Railway pricing is a small plan fee (Hobby 5 USD, Pro 20 USD per workspace) that is credited against metered usage, billed at about 20 USD per vCPU month and 10 USD per GB of RAM month. An API, worker, frontend, staging copy and Postgres that stay running come to about 170 USD a month on Pro. Here is each rate and how it compares with the same apps on your own servers.

Railway plans and prices

Railway charges a plan fee that doubles as a usage credit, so the plan itself is rarely what you pay. These figures come from railway.com/pricing.

PlanMonthly priceIncluded usageLimits and notes
TrialOne-time 5 USD credit5 USDFor testing
Free0 USD1 USDSmall projects
Hobby5 USD5 USDUp to 48 vCPU and 48 GB per service, 6 replicas, 3 members per project
Pro20 USD per workspace20 USDUnlimited seats, higher resource limits, priority support
EnterpriseCustomCustomSSO, RBAC and extended audit logs through annual committed spend

Railway usage rates

Usage is metered on what your services consume, per month.

  • CPU. About 20 USD per vCPU month.
  • Memory. About 10 USD per GB of RAM month.
  • Volumes. About 0.15 USD per GB month.
  • Egress. About 0.05 USD per GB of outbound traffic.

Because billing follows measured use, an app that idles for most of the day costs less than the rates suggest. A service that holds memory and a CPU share around the clock costs close to the full rate.

What a real stack costs on Railway

Take a startup with an API, a queue worker, a Next.js frontend, a staging copy of the API and a Postgres database, all running continuously. Sizes below are the average resources each service holds. Prices in USD per month.

ItemResourcesCalculationMonthly cost
API1 vCPU, 2 GB20 + 2 x 1040
Worker0.5 vCPU, 1 GB10 + 1020
Next.js frontend0.5 vCPU, 1 GB10 + 1020
Staging API1 vCPU, 2 GB20 + 2 x 1040
Postgres1 vCPU, 2 GB, 10 GB volume20 + 20 + 1.5041.50
Egress200 GB200 x 0.0510
Usage total40 + 20 + 20 + 40 + 41.50 + 10171.50

On Pro the 20 USD plan fee is credited against that usage, so the invoice is about 171.50 USD, not 191.50. These are worst-case numbers for services that never idle. Real bills run lower when staging or the worker sit quiet, and higher when traffic and memory grow.

Why Railway bills surprise teams

Three things move the number without anyone shipping code. Memory leaks and larger caches raise the RAM line on every service. Preview environments each run their own copies while they live. Traffic spikes raise egress. None of this is unfair, since you only pay for what runs, but it makes the monthly total a forecast, not a fixed figure. Teams that need a number to put in a budget tend to look at flat pricing for exactly this reason.

Railway vs your own servers

The same five workloads fit on one 8 GB, 4 vCPU cloud server, with Postgres on the same machine or on a second small one. Cloud servers of that size typically cost around 25 to 50 USD a month depending on the provider.

Railway Pro, continuous use20 (credited)171.50about 171.50
Two own servers with Deployment Starter4950 to 10099 to 149
Same, Starter billed yearly2450 to 10074 to 124

The saving is roughly 20 to 100 USD a month at this size, and the gap widens as services multiply because extra processes share the server. In exchange you take on capacity planning, backups and OS patching. Once the database moves, it helps to monitor data freshness and anomalies in the database from day one. See the full Railway alternative comparison for migration steps.

When Railway is the right buy

Railway wins for prototypes, side projects and teams with bursty or mostly idle workloads, where per-use billing beats a fixed server. Deploys are quick, databases are one click and there is no server to patch. If your usage stays under roughly the cost of a Deployment Starter plan, stay put.

When Deployment fits the team

Move when services run around the clock, when you want a fixed monthly number, when customers require workloads in your own cloud account, or when you need roles and an audit log without an annual commitment. Deployment manages servers on AWS, DigitalOcean, Hetzner, Linode and Vultr, or bare metal over SSH.

Railway pricing questions

How much does Railway cost per month?

Railway has a Free plan at 0 USD with 1 USD of usage, Hobby at 5 USD including 5 USD of usage, and Pro at 20 USD per workspace including 20 USD of usage. Beyond the included amount you pay for what runs, roughly 20 USD per vCPU month and 10 USD per GB of RAM month.

Is Railway free?

Railway offers a one-time 5 USD trial credit and a Free plan with 1 USD of monthly usage. That covers a prototype, not a production app. Always-on services consume usage continuously, so most teams land on Hobby or Pro within weeks.

How does Railway usage pricing work?

Railway bills the CPU and memory your services actually use, plus volume storage at about 0.15 USD per GB month and outbound traffic at about 0.05 USD per GB. A service that idles costs less, and a busy service costs more. The plan fee is credited against usage.

Is Railway cheaper than a VPS?

For a small side project, Railway is usually cheaper because idle time is not billed. For several always-on services with a database, a rented server plus a flat panel fee is often cheaper and the bill does not change with load. Compare your measured CPU and RAM, not the plan fee.

What does a Railway Pro workspace include?

Pro costs 20 USD per workspace and includes 20 USD of usage, up to 1,000 vCPU and 1 TB of RAM per service, unlimited seats and priority support. SSO, role-based access control and extended audit logs are tied to annual committed spend, so they are not part of the standard plan.
